'De kat van Mondriaan' was originally created by Coen Bouwstra and published in 2012 by Dutch publisher WBOOKS. After its release the book found its way to bookstores and museumshops across the Netherlands. Since then, the maquettes and figures have been exhibited at the art museum in Vianen and the main library in Amersfoort, before moving to Indonesia for the world premier of the theatre performance at Erasmus Huis.

In 2022 it has been re-released to celebrate Piet Mondrian's 150th birthday. This time it is being published in two versions: A Dutch version and an English version.

With the theatre show possibly going on tour in China and Japan, it opens up possibilities for publication of the book in these countries as well.
